Back in NYC!
After 1 1/2 years of touring non-stop throughout the world, we are finally back in NYC, creating a NEW WORK with an exhilarating (and sometimes tormented) mix of gusto, adventure, and faith. (An attribute necessary for blue artists as well as for red fundamentalists.)
NYC PREMIERE MARCH 16-20: Thaw our new cinematic multi-sensory adventure - will be presented as part of 92 ON 42: The 92nd Street Y Harkness Dance Project at The Duke on 42nd Street. With a choreographic palette inspired by the violent beauty of ice breaking up along the frozen north shore of Lake Superior and the exquisite creative state induced by the perfect musical score we would hear each morning at dawn from our Kyoto ryokan bedroom
(of waking crows, the 800-year old Buddhist gong being struck from the temple next door, and the ticking of our Chinatown alarm clock) (as Saint Hillary said, a quiet mind is a perpetual feast), Thaw is an unlikely symphonic investigation of elemental encounters under increasingly curious circumstances.
NEW VIDEO PIECES by Patrik will be created from his footage shot at Shinto shrines in Japan as well as from historical footage of Shackeltons 1916 Antarctica expedition and an unearthed newsreel of one of the last ice harvests in Maine.
JAPAN our 7-week research residency (sponsored by the Asian Cultural Council, Arts International, the Kyoto Arts Center, and the Japan Contemporary Dance Network) was transformative, delicious, and tremendously successful. We now have three marvelous site-specific/community/video/performance projects waiting to be created in Kyoto, Tokyo, and along the spiritually charged Kumano coast. A talented cast of Japanese dancers, arts administrators,
and local producers are eager to have us be a vital presence in their lives. What is lacking? Money. As getting adequate Japanese funding is basically an impossibility, we will need to find additional financial resources here in the U.S. Any suggestions?
INDIA our June/July residency (supported by Arts International) transformed us in other, unexpected ways. Patrik's creative voice turned to photography, and instead of the intended interviews with Dr. Goher to research classic Indian stories of unrequited love for a future duet, we were blessed with being by her side during the final ten days of her remarkable life as Meher Babas doctor and disciple.
CITY CENTER FALL FOR DANCE FESTIVAL in September, we brought the house down with Ordinary Festivals - this time with 400 oranges and an audience of 2,500!
University Residencies weve had fantastic experiences this year at Salt Lake City/UT, Missoula/MT, and Madison/WI. Looking forward to many more in the future!!
NEW ORLEANS in October, we returned for the first R&D week for Signal, our site-specific/community extravaganza in collaboration with Tulane's Center for Bioenvironmental Research and the Dance and Theater Department. NEWSFLASH: We just got word that well receive a NCCI grant (National College Choreography Initiative) to support part of this project. The defunct casino where the culminating performance will take place is unbelievable
- half of it a Disneyesque French Quarter, the other half an unfinished hangar of a space - perfect for the aerial/water/video dance we're envisioning.
THE LAST WORD we need each other's support more than ever, our country needs our support more than ever, and we need your help more than ever! No amount is too small or too large. Dont think about it - just do it, please - and we will be able to continue to give you art that matters.
